Gigi Giroux

Featured Artist
Geneviève Giroux

Geneviève Giroux, also known as Gigi to us and her loyal fans, is a Canadian artist. Simple lines, luminous colors, textures, and humor defines her style. She works in mixed media and uses watercolor, gouache, ink, and acrylic. Gigi then mixes them with papers and fabrics from around the world.

Gigi grew up in a midsize town called Victoriaville in Québec. Her mom, Lili, was from Bruxelles and she was an artist. She raised Gigi and her three brothers Eric, Laurent and Louis with her best friend, Roch.

Finding her path as an artist was quite a journey. It did not begin at school as she studied Sciences, Literature and History. She graduated with honors from University of Montreal and did all sorts of jobs. She sure did a lot: journalism, fund raising, public speaking, teaching scuba diving and French and interpreting. She had the chance to do this in Montreal and abroad.

In terms of her art, the first artist inspired her as a kid was a guy from Italy named Mordillo. It was colorful, simple and funny, characteristics that stayed with her. Her work also has been influenced by colorful, simple and funny artists like Raymond Peynet, Jean-Jacques Sempé, Mayra Kalman, Roz Chast and the New Yorker magazine.

Gigi says:
“I got very very lucky on my path. First to meet someone crazy enough to stick with me more than one day, aka everyday, and telling me that I could make something out of my art (heart). Second to have had the chance to be picked by Constance Kay inc. who gave me my first real gig to do what I love the most in life: drawing, creating and finishing my day at doing this by good food, good laugh with the ones I love.”

Gigi now lives in sunny California with her husband, Philip, and their Wheaten Terrier, Rose.
